Gender Book Tour -Sarajevo: Presentation of the book "Gendering Post-Socialist Transition. Studies of Changing Gender Perspectives"

Sarajevo. The last stop of the „Gender Book Tour“, a project initiated by ERSTE Foundation and implemented by WUS Austria, was Sarajevo. On the 4th October 2013 a presentation of the book "Gendering Post-Socialist Transition. Studies of Changing Gender Perspectives" was organised at the Center for Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies – University of Sarajevo.

The panel gathered experts of different profiles from three countries: Marina Blagojevic Hughson (author) from Serbia, Jelena Milinovic (researcher), Jasmina Husanovic from (reviewer), and Jasna Baksic Muftic (reviewer) from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Karl Kaser (editor) from Austria, who moderated the discussion.

Panelists focused in the speeches on the following topics:

Jasmina Husanovic – Review of the book with the focus on its contribution to the field of gender and social studies

Marina Blagojevic Hughson – Vulnerabilities and vulnerable societies, and findings from the research on single parents in the Western Balkans

Jelena Milinovic – Experience from the research on single parents in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Jasna Baksic Muftic – Challenges in the process of implementation of the gender policies in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Western Balkans and the obstacles for their faster implementation with the reference to the book in question

Despite the rich cultural programme in Sarajevo in this period a lot of people participated in the event and they were thrilled by the fact that there was another valuable publication in the field of gender studies covering broad range of topics, which was very much needed. They expressed their great interest in the book and in the projects in this field in the discussion with the organisers during the reception after the presentation, accompanied by fantastic traditional food.

We are grateful to our partners from the Center for Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies – University of Sarajevo for the great cooperation and hospitality.

The book "Gendering Post-Socialist Transition. Studies of Changing Gender Perspectives" was developed as Volume 1 of the ERSTE Foundation Series as a result of the research which explored the social constructions of femininity and masculinity and the role of women in Central & South East Europe with focus on the transition beginning in 1989. This was the last event within the series of the book presentations, which were organised in Belgrade, Zagreb, Sofia and Budapest as well.  Its aim is to raise awareness and support the discussion among the academics, researchers, students, NGOs, media and the general public regarding the issue of gender and especially the transformation of gender identities in Central and South East Europe.
