Since 1992 WUS Austria has been assisting students from Bosnia and Herzegovina. At the beginning of its engagement for the universities in the country WUS Austria supported Bosnian students who escaped the war in their home country and came to Austria in order to continue their studies there. After a meeting with the rector of the University of Sarajevo in 1993 WUS Austria organized a collection at several universities in Austria and supported the university with humanitarian emergency aid.

In 1994 WUS Austria started its "Academic Lifeline" Programme for Sarajevo, which soon became a support project for all universities in the BiH Federation (Sarajevo, Mostar, Tuzla and Bihac).

The first WUS Austria office in the region was opened at the Law Faculty of the University of Sarajevo. With the assistance of the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria, the European Union and many other donors WUS Austria constantly enlarged its support activities for the improvement of Higher Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1996, shortly after the war WUS Austria financially supported the entire teaching staff of the BiH Federation by implementing its Teaching Support Programme and that way guaranteed the provisional operation of most faculties in the country.
The University of Banja Luka finally was included in the "Academic Lifeline" Programme in 1996. Two years later in 1998 an independent regional WUS office in Banja Luka started its work.

Since then WUS Austria's support programmes cover the entire university system in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Because of its rich variety of different activities and projects WUS Austria became the leading NGO in the field of Higher Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In February 1999 the constituent assembly of the Bosnian Committee of World University Service took place at the University of Sarajevo. The new founded committee of "Svjetski Univerzitetski Servis Bosne i Hercegovine" (SUS BiH) since then gradually takes over parts of the activities of WUS Austria in Bosnia and Herzegovina and, in particular, operates the new Academic Co-operation Centre for Students in Sarajevo (ACCESS) at the university campus of Sarajevo.

By the end of the year 2000 WUS Austria left its former office rooms at the Law Faculty of the University of Sarajevo and moved to the new ACCESS Centre at the university campus at the former Marshall Tito Barracks in Sarajevo - Marijin Dvor. Being a most important meeting point for students and academics in Bosnia and Herzegovina the ACCESS Centre perfectly contributes to the future work of WUS Austria and its commitments to the improvement of Higher Education in the entire region .

The Brain Gain Program (BGP) is aimed at opening the higher education sector in SEE by inviting emigrated academics from the region to lecture courses.
Degree Development Structure (DDS) supports interested BH university institu-tions in creating tailor-made degree programs whose graduates are highly demanded by the local labor market and society, as well as of specific professions.
